A New Name for the World’s Leading Touchscreen Supplier

Elographics Changes Its Name to Elo TouchSystems

February 1, 1994

Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Elographics, the leading supplier of touchscreens, announced today that it has changed its name to Elo TouchSystems—a name that more clearly defines the company’s expertise in the fast-growing market for computer touchscreens.

“As a market leader, we must ensure that our name communicates precisely what we do for our customers: We manufacture and install leading-edge touchscreen solutions,” says Elo TouchSystems president and CEO Robert Roeser. “Since 1971, this company has dedicated itself solely to pioneering and advancing touch technology. With so many new customers entering the growing market for touchscreens, we want to make it easier for people to find us. Changing our name to Elo TouchSystems helps us achieve that goal.”

The touchscreen market: expanding rapidly

Annual sales of touchscreens now total between $100 million and $150 million. Industry analysts such as Market Intelligence Research Corporation and Stanford Resources, Inc. estimate that the market is currently expanding by 25 percent annually. Market projections forecast that the market will grow to more than $500 million in annual sales by 1998.

Market segments include public information, point-of-sale, process control, and gaming applications. In the market for public-information kiosks, touchscreen sales are doubling each year, according to MIRC.

An expert in touch

Elo TouchSystems offers the broadest line of touchscreen products and technologies available in the computer industry. “For many years, we’ve been committed to simplifying computers for users worldwide,” says John Carlson, Elo TouchSystems vice president of marketing. “The touchscreen is, in our view, the simplest and most intuitive computer interface ever invented.” Elo TouchSystems pioneered touch technology and invented resistive touchscreens, the most popular touchscreen technology in the world today. In addition, the company is the exclusive manufacturer of bright, clear, and durable touchscreens utilizing surface wave technology.

This technology provides the basis for the company’s line of IntelliTouch touchscreens, which offer superior brightness, clarity, image resolution, and reliability. IntelliTouch systems are particularly useful in applications demanding high-level graphics, including public-information and transaction kiosks, amusement games, and interactive training systems.

Elo TouchSystems harnesses its resistive technology in a family of products called AccuTouch touchscreens, which deliver durability and consistent performance in demanding environments, including restaurant and factory-floor applications.

Lower prices and increased power fuel touch growth

“Price is one of the primary reasons for touchscreens gaining popularity at present,” says Carlson. “First of all, PCs are more affordable now and are making forays into previously uncharted areas, where a touchscreen can be a big help to inexperienced computer users. At the same time, touchscreen prices are dropping substantially. A customer that wants to eliminate confusing keyboard commands and make his or her application intuitive can now justify investing in touchscreen technology. And while costs get lower, the performance of touch systems continues to rise, in terms of faster touch response and improved system reliability.”

The other factor driving the touchscreen marketplace, Carlson says, is comfort level. “In the United States in particular, people are more aware of touchscreens now, and they’re more familiar with the technology. Whether it’s an information directory in a music store, a video lottery terminal, or a self-purchasing system at a shopping mall, people have grown accustomed to seeing and using touch systems. They appreciate the simplicity and directness of touchscreens. You simply touch what you want on the screen and the system responds.”

Versatility: matching sizes and customers’ needs

Elo TouchSystems designs its IntelliTouch and AccuTouch touchscreens for use with IBM, Macintosh, and other platforms. In addition, both the IntelliTouch and AccuTouch product families include touchscreens capable of fitting a wide range of display sizes—from large, curved touchscreens that fit 21-inch monitors for kiosks to small, flat touchscreens used in point-of-sale environments and other applications where space is tight. Additionally, Elo TouchSystems offers its customers a full line of controller cards, software driver programs, and application development tools. The company also provides comprehensive customer support services.
